Meeting Lille Metropole
Villeneuve d’Ascq, France,
08 June 2007
Three ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes benefited from the experience of competing in the Meeting Lille Metropole, an EAA Premium Meeting, in Lille, France, on Friday 8 June.
Rachael Thompson (Liverpool Harriers) and Jessica Coulson (Stockport Harriers) won the 800m and 1500m respectively in the pre-programme meeting against mainly French opposition. Following her excellent early season performances Emma Pallant (Aldershot Farnham and District) was upgraded to compete in the international 1500m in the main meeting programme.
In the pre-programme 800m Rachael was in third place when the pacemaker went through the bell in the scheduled 62 seconds. She moved into the lead with about 300 metres to go and led the field home in a time of 2:08.35, ahead of Laura Miclo (France) in 2:08.69 and Aniesse Laurent (Belgium) in 2:08.74 who both set personal bests.
Jess was disappointed with her winning time in the 1500m after the pacemaker slowed dramatically on the second lap. At the 400m point, which the pacemaker went through in the scheduled 68 seconds, a group of five had broken away with Jess in second place. The pacemaker couldn’t maintain the tempo and Jess took on the pace with about 750 metres gone. After a 74 second 400m she did well to push on and record a time of 4:22.65, less than a second outside her personal best. She pulled French athlete Elodie Mouthon to a massive new personal best of 4:23.02 and these two finished well clear of the rest of the field.
In the 1500m in the main programme Emma Pallant finished 12th in 4:13.93 in a race won in 4:07.91 by Ibtissam Lakhouad of Morocco. She finished less than half a second behind Natalya Gorelova of Russia who has previously run under four minutes for the distance. One place ahead of Gorelova was one of Emma’s training partners Steph Twell who ran 4:12.32.
