Hannah England’s Olympic Experience
29 August 2008
‘On Camp with Kelly’ athlete Hannah England reports on her recent trip to Beijing.
I went to Beijing as part of a programme developed by the British Olympic Association called London 2012 Olympic Ambition. The aim of the programme was to give young potential Olympians an insight into how an Olympic Games works and to prepare us for London 2012.
The first part of the week long trip was spent visiting the preparation camp in Macau. The whole Olympic team had used this holding camp and a lot of thought and planning had gone into making it as comfortable as possible for the athletes. I hadn't realised quite how much planning had gone into every aspect of the camp.
The main focus of the camp was to create the perfect environment for the athletes and the BOA had achieved this by providing easy access to training and treatment, making sure the food was healthy and appropriate, and even providing a games room to help athletes keep themselves occupied.
After two days in Macau we were transferred to Beijing. We used the same transport route as the competitors had done, again the level of planning was outstanding! We were really well looked after by all the Chinese staff and it was a lovely way to arrive at the Olympic Games.
As soon as we landed the Olympic spirit was thriving, the whole country seemed to be behind the Games. We'd talked a lot about how big London 2012 would be and judging from the Chinese people, it’s going to be great having the whole of Britain behind our Olympics.
Once in Beijing we visited the Athletes Village and got to see where the GB athletes were staying. As in Macau the accommodation was amazing, the athletes had everything they needed and looked very comfortable.
We spent our last two days watching the athletics at the Bird’s Nest Stadium. The stadium was awesome, it was huge and had a great atmosphere. I felt really lucky to be there getting to watch such high class athletics!
I also got to see Kelly at the stadium, always nice to see a friendly face when you're away, and good to have a catch up!
The whole trip was rather hectic but I feel I got a lot out of it. I was worried that I would be upset about having to see the inner workings of a championship that I really wanted to be competing in and not just watching. It was gutting seeing other athletes become Olympians, but it’s provided me with a lot of motivation - hopefully enough for the next 4 years!
