Emma Pallant wins Bronze at World Juniors
13 July 2008
Emma Pallant (Aldershot, Farnham & District) put in a brilliant performance to win the bronze medal in the 1500m final at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, on Sunday 13 July.
It was a rain soaked evening on the final day of the championships that saw Emma take part in the biggest race of her career to date. The line up in what was set to be a formidable race saw Emma’s training partner, world number one Steph Twell, looking set to go for gold but the fight for the other podium places was very open. The presence of two Ethiopians promised a fast race but the outcome was far from decided with the up and coming talent of Emma Pallant, British number two and third in the world rankings, snapping at their heels.
Looking a little nervous as she lined up for the start Emma got into the race well, falling into an easy stride that suited her race plan from the start. The steady pace meant that everybody was bunching with Emma and Steph towards the back. At 800m the race was still tactical with Ethiopian Kalkidan Gezahegne leading the field through in 2:25.30 and Emma found herself on the inside needing to get out of trouble.
With 400m to go as the leaders accelerated for the final lap, Emma moved tactically out of the pack, covering the move made by Steph and Gezahegne. She battled hard to gain on Gezahegne in second place and as Steph Twell crossed the line first in 4:15.09, Emma pushed on home to win the bronze medal in 4:17.06. Gezahegne took the silver in 4:16.58.
The gold and bronze medals achieved by the girls was a fantastic end to the championships for the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team and was a real credit to their proud coach Mick Woods. After a victory lap by the two British athletes with the Union Jack held proudly by both and smiles from ear to ear they gave their reactions:
Emma said: “I actually enjoyed the race. At the start the pace was good but everything that could go wrong did! I was trying not get blocked in and it was tricky, but I got out in the end and made sure I did not miss the break. I knew at the bell that I could get something and I just went for it. I came here for a medal and I did it: a World medal!
A tearful Steph, overcome with emotion, said: “I can’t describe how much this means to me. It means so much after coming back from injury. I wanted it so badly. I came in as number one, but I thrive on pressure and people expecting more of me makes me expect more of myself. I am just overwhelmed!”
Dame Kelly, who has been mentoring Emma in Bydgoszcz, was delighted and said: “This is a fantastic result for Emma. She has worked so hard all year, improving all the time and she has achieved what she came to Poland for: a World Junior medal. I am really proud of her and feel she has more to give!
“It was brilliant to see two British girls on the podium. Steph ran a super race and she should be delighted that she came to the championships as world number one and is going home with gold. Their coach, Mick Woods, should be really proud that his hard work and time put into coaching both Steph and Emma has paid off when it matters most.”
