Bronze for Charlotte Best at World University Games
14 August 2007

Charlotte Best from Loughborough University and Crawley AC ran the race of her life in Bangkok on 14 August to win the bronze medal in the 800m at the World University Games.

22-year-old Charlotte improved her personal best to 2:01.50 to finish third behind 26-year-old Ukrainian Yuliya Krevsun, who took two seconds off her personal best to clock 1:57.63 and set a new world leading time for 2007. 20-year-old Ekaterina Kostetskaya from Russia, the 2004 world junior 400m hurdles champion, also set a personal best to win the silver medal in 1:59.52.

The race was fast from the gun with the Krevsun and Kostetskaya going through 200m in 27 seconds and 400m in just over 56 seconds. After going through the bell in fourth and sixth places in 58-59 seconds, Laura and Charlotte began to attack for a medal. With 100 metres to go Laura began to drop back as Charlotte moved through into fourth place and then third with 30 metres to go.

After the race Charlotte said: “I’m so surprised I ran a PB after three races in four days. As far as the race itself is concerned I remember going past the girls in fourth and fifth to get myself into contention, but after that it’s a bit of a blur!”

Charlotte’s team mate Laura Finucane (Loughborough University & Pendle AC) finished sixth in 2:03.18 but later the same day had her own bronze medal to celebrate when she teamed up with Kelly Massey, Kadi-Ann Thomas and Faye Harding to run the second leg of the 4x400m. The GB team clocked 3:33.70 to finish third behind Ukraine with 3:29.59 and Russia with 3:30.49. Laura’s split of 52.8 was the fastest of the four British athletes, an excellent achievement just 75 minutes after running in the 800m final.

Laura said: “The whole trip was an awesome experience, competing in the biggest competition of my sporting career. It gave me a lot of hunger for next season.”

Both Charlotte and Laura had qualified comfortably for the 800m semi finals in their heats on Saturday 11 August, clocking times of 2:07.93 and 2:05.57 respectively. In Monday’s semi-finals, Charlotte finished third in 2:03.02 and Laura second in 2:04.71.

The World University Games took place in temperatures in the mid thirties and was an excellent learning experience for both athletes and Laura’s coach John Nuttall, who was able to travel to Bangkok thanks to a financial contribution from ‘On Camp with Kelly’.

Note: The World University Games are for athletes aged between 17 and 27 who are studying for a degree or a diploma.
