Important Week for OCWK Athletes
07 July 2008

A number of ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes will be competing in some of the most important competitions of their athletics careers this week.

Four OCWK athletes are part of the Norwich Union GB Team at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, which start tomorrow (8 July).  Alison Leonard and Chris Smith start their campaigns in the 800m and David Forrester in the 1500m on Tuesday, while Emma Pallant must wait until Friday for the heats of the women’s 1500m.  Dame Kelly will be travelling to Bydgoszcz to support the OCWK athletes competing there.

Many OCWK athletes will be in action at the ESAA Sainsbury's English Schools Track & Field Championships in Gateshead on 11 and 12 July.

Rachel Stringer (Norfolk) will be defending the Senior Girls 800m title that she won last year, with silver medallist Lucy Dowsett (Cambs) also in the field.  Rowena Cole (West Midlands) defends her Intermediate Girls 800m title while the silver and bronze medallists Kerrie Harris (Humberside) and Leigh Lennon (Lancashire) move up to challenge Rachel and Lucy in the Senior age group.  Seniors Stacey Smith (Northumberland) and Ejiro Okoro (West Midlands) are also previous medallists, having taken silver and bronze in the Intermediate 800m in 2006.

Last year’s Intermediate 1500m gold medallist Laura Weightman (Northumberland) moves up to the Senior age group while Kate Avery (Durham), who remains in the Intermediates, will be looking to go one better than the silver medals she won last year and in the Junior race in 2006.  The winner of the Intermediate 3000m in 2007, Jess Burns (Devon), is also a Senior this year.

Adam Moore (Berks) will be looking to add the Senior Boys 800m title to the Intermediate titles he won in 2006 and 2007 and the Junior title he won in 2005.

Some of the older ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes will be competing against the UK’s best senior athletes at the Aviva National Championships incorporating the Olympic Trials in Birmingham on 11-13 July.

Hannah England currently tops the women’s 1500m rankings with the 4:06.19 she ran to win the NCAA title in the USA in June.  She will be aiming to finish in one of the top two places at the Trials to secure her place in Team GB for Beijing.

Charlotte Best, who came close to her personal best with a time of 2:01.60 to finish sixth in the European Athletics Permit Meeting in Bydgoszcz on 1 July, will be hoping to make an impact in the women’s 800m, which looks set to be one of the most competitive events of the weekend.
