World 1500m silver medallist Hannah England (Oxford City AC) returned from altitude training in Kenya for her first race of 2012 at the Aviva International in Glasgow on Saturday 28 January, while a number of other OCWK athletes have set indoor personal bests over the last couple of weeks.
Hannah finished second in the 1500m in Glasgow in 4:25.11. Having made a determined bid for victory after moving to the front around the half way point she was just pipped on the line by Germany’s Denise Krebs who clocked 4:25.09.

er the race Hannah said: “Today was a lot of fun. I had a race plan and I didn’t intend to go that early but I had to because that’s how the race was going and I was pleased with how I responded to what the other girls were doing. Denise ran a great race and really put herself out at the front so she was always in the mix and congratulations to her.”
Shelayna Oskan-Clarke (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) was also in action in Glasgow, finishing fifth in the 400m in 55.37 behind Julia Terekhova of Russia’s 53.51.
Hannah Brooks (Crawley AC) has set two indoor personal bests in recent races in the USA. She clocked 9:20.11 to win the 3000m at the Auburn Indoor Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama, on 21 January. Then on 28 January she finished third in the mile in 4:37.87 at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville. At the same meeting David Forrester (St Helens Sutton) was tenth in the 3000m in 8:02.79.
Mitch Goose (City of Norwich) improved his 3000m best by 12 seconds, clocking 7:58.11 to finish third at the BU Terrier Invitational in Boston on 27 January.
At the New Balance Games in New York on 21 January James Brewer (Cheltenham Harriers) also set an indoor personal for the mile, finishing second in 3:57.92. Ricky Stevenson (New Marske Harriers) was fourth in 3:58.91 and the race was won by fellow Briton Andy Baddeley in 3:57.23.
Another athlete in PB form was Kris Gauson (Edinburgh AC) who won the 3000m at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington on 20 January in 8:01.40. He returned to Bloomington on 27 January to finish second in the mile in 3:59.85 at the Indiana Relays.
Chris Smith (Wirral AC) was in action in Birmingham, Alabama, on 26 January, winning the 800m in 1:53.03.
At the Bill Bergan Invitational in Ames on 28 January Ejiro Okoro finished fourth in the 800m in 2:10.56 having finished third in 2:13.25 at the Iowa State Open at the same venue on 21 January.
Three OCWK athletes were in action at the SEAA Indoor Championships on Sunday 21 January and all set indoor personal bests. Carolyn Plateau (Radley AC) took second in the women’s 1500m in 4:27.27, Shelayna Oskan-Clarke finished third in the 200m in 24.95 and Zac Randall (Wycombe Phoenix) also took third in the men’s 800m final in 3:55.18 (after clocking 3:53.13 in his heat).
In the area cross country championships on Saturday 28 January, Louise Small (Aldershot Farnham & District) finished second in the junior women’s 6km race in at the Southern Championships in Brighton in 22:34, Jess Coulson (Stockport Harriers) took third in the senior women’s 8km race at the Northern Championships in Pontefract in 31:00 while Lucy Dowsett (Cambridge & Coleridge) was tenth in the senior women’s 8km race in 29:19. Also at the Northern Championships ‘Future Stars with Kelly’ athlete Jen Walsh (Spenborough AC) won the junior women’s 5.6km race by 45 seconds in 18:51.
