‘On Camp with Kelly’ will help me to see what I need to do in order to improve and develop myself as an athlete. Having Kelly as a mentor is like having a guide in a big forest with lots of pathways to go down, and having people like Kelly that have been down a lot of them will help me to take the right pathways, in order to avoid injures and make the progression that brings athletes to the top. Training with other girls who are in this game with me is such a help. Bringing us together allows us to train at the required standard. For a lot of us it is hard to find people to train with for the 800m sessions that are so hard to try and do on your own. I want to say thank you to Kelly for what she is giving back to the sport. She is a massive inspiration to so many middle distance runners and her example has shown in the increasing interest and depth of standard in both girls and women’s 800m and 1500m and the standard in the junior ranks has rocketed ever since her triumph. Kelly is a massive inspiration to me. This is because of her determination to achieve her dream. She knew what she wanted to do in the sport and she made it happen. She is such a good role model not just because she won double gold, but because she isn’t someone who has come from nowhere and out of the blue turned up for a few seasons and done some amazing performances and had it reasonably straight forward like everybody would like. The truth is this isn’t going to be the case in most athletes’ careers and Kelly is someone who’s had to face almost every barrier the sport could throw at an athlete and which would finish off a lot of athletes’ careers. She overcame them and because of this holds so much for athletes like us girls to learn from. |
Athletics keeps my life interesting. I believe that in everybody’s life there should be a project for them to carry out, in terms of seeing where their talents and abilities may take them. I see running as my project in life, and I’m fascinated and excited to see how far I can go and what training works in getting further. When you achieve a goal or get a PB the feeling makes it all worth it and inspires you to carry on. When I see people excited over something that I have done, it gives me a satisfaction that’s hard to come by. It reminds me why I want to succeed.
I won silver medals at both English Schools and UK School Games in high jump in 2006, but despite this I believe that my 800m running is of a much higher standard. I love to win medals and I chose to compete in the high jump as this is where I believed I had a better chance of winning. |
