Involvement with OCWK

James took part in the Loughborough Educational Camp in April and the Male Athlete Get-Together in Leeds in September 2008.

He received an 'On Camp with Kelly' Outstanding Achievement Award in 2009 in recognition of his silver medal at the European Athletics Under 23 Championships and selection for the IAAF World Championships.

Performances in 2009

James improved his 1500m best to 3:39.01, a B qualifying standard for the IAAF World Championships, at the BMC Nike Grand Prix in Watford on 13 June. He won the 1500m title at the Aviva England Under 23 Championships on 28 June and then won the silver medal at the European Athletics Under 23 Championships in Kaunas on 19 July.  His excellent sixth place in the Emsley Carr Mile at the Aviva London Grand Prix on 25 July when he clocked a 1500m split of 3:38.9 earned him selection for the Aviva GB Team for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin.  In Berlin he performed brilliantly, first setting a personal best of 3:37.17 (9th on UK U23 all-time list) in his heat and then running close to that for sixth in his semi final with 3:37.27, missing a place in the final by just 0.09 seconds.

James focussed on 1500m during the 2008 indoor season, setting a new personal best of 3:41.89 and finishing third in the UK Indoor Championships.
