15 ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes took part in a training camp in Kelly’s home town of Tonbridge on 5-9 July 2010. The athletes were Charlotte Best, Hannah Brooks, Charlotte Browning, Dani Christmas, Jess Coulson, Lucy Dowsett, Kate Hindle, Katie Knowles, Leigh Lennon, Ejiro Okoro, Shelayna Oskan, Emma Pallant, Carolyn Plateau, Charlotte Roach and Louise Small.
Using the excellent facilities at Tonbridge School, the athletes took part in a variety of different training sessions, including runs, track sessions, drills, aqua-jogging and core stability. They also benefited from media training and one-to-ones with Kelly.
The athletes were also treated to a surprise visit to the London 2012 Olympic Park where Kelly gave a short talk at the Construction Crew Graduation Event organised by the Olympic Delivery Authority. The Construction Crew project has helped to develop leadership and responsibility skills amongst primary school pupils from the five Olympic host boroughs. The athletes were taken on a bus tour of the Olympic Park and found the visit very inspiring.
The athletes were also involved in devising and leading a training session for local young athletes. As part of their personal development through the initiative, some of the athletes have completed a UK Athletics Coaching Assistant qualification and were able to put their new skills into practice by devising and running the training session and mentoring the next generation under the guidance of Kelly.
65 young athletes aged 10-17 from Kent attended the session, including 11 from Kelly’s old school, Hugh Christie Technology College, with her former PE teacher Debbie Page.
